Yes.. but that's the whole point. Before the internet took over you couldn't know what other songs on an album was like to go run out and buy that one song. The only songs you knew about were what they played on the radio and on TV. The singles. You would have to judge an album off the singles.
And if you're talking about only MAJOR hit singles.. then no.. even smaller singles were sold on Vinyl, Tape & CD.
didn't Fred Meyer and Sam Goody have a system where you could listen to every song though? Like, you scanned the barcode at this machine and went on your way?

Not sure. I used to buy all my albums from local music shops.
