    Re: I wanna hear everything!

Never mix with headphones, I know. I wish I could get monitors, but can't.

    1) My neighborhood is pretty calm, peaceful. You never hear neighbors music in your house. I'm pretty sure they'll flip if they do.

    2) Bro is in college and always studying. Pretty sure he'll mind.

    3) 80% of the time, my parents/the rest of my family will mind.

So yeah... I think headphones... unfortunately... is my only solution.

well if you really cant get monitors get the best headphones you can afford, i hear open back are generally better for mixing, but they wont double up so well for tracking if you need em for that....as to which are best, ive no idea...pick a budget and google then take a gamble.

if you're making that much noise you're listening way too loud.

BTW... if someone tells you to NEVER use headphones when mixing they don't have a clue what they're talking about. you NEED a good set of headphones to accompany your monitors. Even when you have good monitors, you use the headphones to hear more specific details in the mix.

Sony MDR-7506 headphones are an industry standard for tracking, and they also work 'ok' for mixing.

yea, they're fine for mixing as long as you know how they make the music sound. I did well with them for a few years before I could afford good monitors.

Do they impart a really boomy kind of bass tone to everything like most consumer grade closed-back phones?

What cans are you wokring with at the moment Opes?

    Re: I wanna hear everything!

I stick with the 7506s. I have a few pairs. I also have sennheiser hd280s but I only use them for tracking. the 7506s don't have that hollow bass sound like cheap headphones. they are a little boomy in the sub bass tho. Thats true of closed back headphones in general. only reason i dont switch to open back is because i've been using these for years so i know exactly what they sound like compared to my other monitoring sources.

    That's what's up.

I just got some Sennheiser HD201's with a grip kit I got from school, they have almost No bass representation at all.

Before that, I used some even cheaper Nady HP03's..these came right out of the box with the left speaker shorted out. I guess that's how they manfacture them, ha.

I find the 7506s are way more crisp and airy than any other source I listen on... so they help for killin' any harsh highs and shit... they're good for hearin' reverb and echo also that my monitors sometimes don't reveal...

yup. my $7000 monitors don't reveal the harshness as well as my headphones. That's the type of thing that good headphones give you to help you mix.

I'm googling what are tracking headphones... and all I'm getting is "What are the best headphones for tracking."

    What are tracking headphones?
