Thread: .9999 repeating forever does NOT =1!

    .9999 repeating forever does NOT =1!

    I know that thread has died out, but this was irking me. I knew .999 forever could not be equaled to 1, and now I can prove it.

    The example wikipedia gave:

    .333 = 1/3
    3 x 1/3= 1; 3 x .333= .999
    So therefor, 1=.999 right? WRONG!

    See there was this one really simple thing we all overlooked.
    And that was .333 does not equal to 1/3. We assume it does, they teach us in school that it does, but in reality it does NOT equal to 1/3. Any logical person can see why this is true, .333 in fraction form would be equal to 1/3 and one third one third one third repeating. With this being said, the proof as to why .999=1 is not valid, therefor .999 does NOT equal to 1.

    Ahhhh *feels relieved*

    Are you retarded... Divide 1 by 3 and you get 0.3333 repeating. That is FACT. The fraction 1/3 is just '1 divided by 3'.

    By the way, Mic, 1/3 is a problem, not a solution. Fractions are problems. We use them as solutions for lack of an actual solution, because the actual solution to the problem(the fraction) is infinite.

    Of course you could say the problem is the solution to any math problem. Although, if that was truly the case, there would be no math classes. I think we solve problems for a reason, and one divided by three equals an infinite number, not 1/3. By saying the answer to 1 divided by three is 1/3, you's saying that 2+2 = 2+2. You're answering the problem with the problem instead of a solution.
