“The farther we’ve gotten from the magic and mystery of our past,
the more we’ve come to need Halloween.” —Paula Guran
I remember.
I always loved the simple things that life provides
The endorphin rush I got when I would go and play outside
Pretending we’re our hero’s with cop and robber vibes
Or subsiding in a circle of other kids who thought alike
We’d invite ideas larger than realism would allow
No matter how plausible, Idealism was endowed
But. Somehow impossible wasn’t a word that resonated
Obstacles were driving forces that reverbed imagination
So patience was a virtue not instilled into me yet
Life progressed at speeds that left no room to feel regret
I was contempt in innocence. The kind that age erases
Then fades away w/ time as wrinkles form across our faces
Carefully displayed are memories we’ll always cherish
& the ones we can’t embrace are the ones that always perish
Old enough to understand but yet too young to fear it
Still devoid of all the shame that we eventually inherit
So removed from pain that were unable to compare it
Or stand on steady legs when it was time for us to near it
When adolescence bids ado but were too arrogant to hear it
Then our inner child exits, but it sticks with us in spirit
Its Here.
Halloween approaches, dreams of Jack-O-Lantern scenes
Streets permeate with playful screams ‘n children frolicking
October seems to always be her favorite month
The excitement in my little nieces eyes while she’s dressing up
And I confess. I’m feeling envious as fuck
To be 7 once again ‘n feel that sense of happiness erupt
It’s lost within, so we mask it all behind our shallow grins
As I bend down to fix her hair & feel the growl beneath my shins
Or the appending pops that crackle in my knees
Or the grimace in my teeth just bouncing back up on my feet
Candied apples coated in the sweetest Carmel glaze
Afraid to sneak a taste because I’m monitoring my weight
The anticipation racing as if she can hardly wait
Plastic pumpkin bucket in her hand, w/ her freshly painted face
Almost takes me back to when I was standing in her place
Reminds me of the kid I used to be. (Ya know) That one that age erased
So on this day, I get to travel back in time
And visit with that child once again that I forgot was still inside
Lets go.
